What Happens During A Hearing Test?

When you visit us for your hearing exam, our welcoming front office staff will assist you in completing various forms, including those for personal information, medical history, and insurance verification.

As your hearing exam commences, we will engage you in a discussion to gather key information. We'll ask questions to pinpoint the specific environments where you may be encountering hearing difficulties and loss.

Subsequently, we may employ an otoscope, a specialized instrument to examine your ear canal and eardrum, and/or perform one of the following tests.

A Hearing Screening Will Enable Us to Determine:

  • Whether or not you have hearing loss
  • The potential cause of your hearing loss
  • The extent and type of hearing loss (in one or both ears)
  • The most suitable treatment options

Audiometric Test

During this hearing evaluation, a series of low and high-frequency tones will be used to assess your ability to understand spoken language in a typical conversational setting. You'll also be asked to repeat several words. These results aid in gauging your degree of hearing loss, speech comprehension, and the potential benefits of hearing aids.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a hearing test that varies air pressure in the ear canal to assess the condition of the middle ear, the mobility of the eardrum (tympanic membrane), and the function of the ossicles (conduction bones).

Soundfield Testing

We provide testing in soundfield through the speakers in our testing booth for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and for cochlear implant evaluations.

Understanding Your Hearing Test Results

We will document the outcomes of your hearing test on an audiogram, which we will thoroughly review with you. The audiogram visualizes your hearing loss across different frequencies and decibel levels. It illustrates the type, pattern, and severity of your hearing loss, as well as the percentage of normal conversational speech you can still perceive. We will then relate these findings to your specific concerns about your hearing.

Next, we will explore potential treatment options. Our team is committed to dedicating the necessary time to comprehend your needs fully, ensuring that you receive all the information required to make an informed, personal decision.
